Staff Software Engineer – Database Engine Internals

About the role

Databricks is building the next‑generation decoupled query engine and structured storage system that will redefine data warehousing. The team focuses on query compilation, distributed execution, vectorized engines, data security, and automatic physical data optimization. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Database Engine Internals team in Belgrade, you will design and implement core components that enable high‑performance relational queries while preserving the flexibility of Apache Spark. Your work will directly influence the performance and reliability of the Lakehouse platform used by thousands of customers worldwide. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure seamless integration with storage, security, and resource‑management layers.

Key responsibilities

• Drive requirements clarity and make design decisions for ambiguous problems.
• Produce technical design documents and detailed project plans.
• Develop new features for the query engine and storage system.
• Mentor junior engineers and guide code reviews.
• Test, roll out, and monitor production releases.

Required profile

• Passion for database, storage, distributed systems, language design, or performance optimization.
• Comfortable working toward a multi‑year vision with incremental deliverables.
• Customer‑oriented mindset focused on impact.
• 7+ years of experience in related system development.
• Optional PhD in databases or distributed systems.
