Senior Electrical Engineer

About the role

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Power Transmission and Distribution team. The role involves working on high‑voltage (HV) substation projects and innovative grid solutions across Ireland, the UK and Europe, supporting the energy transition.

Key responsibilities

• Develop primary plant layouts and equipment specifications for HV substations (110 kV‑400 kV).
• Provide engineering design input from feasibility through detailed design, construction monitoring and commissioning.
• Coordinate with client teams and internal disciplines (civil, structural, environmental, CAD/BIM, protection and control).
• Deliver projects involving new technologies such as energy storage, HVDC, smart‑grid and waste‑to‑energy solutions.
• Offer professional services to clients in the UK, Ireland and overseas, including major German transmission system operators.

Required profile

• Degree‑level qualification in Electrical Engineering, ideally working towards Chartered Engineer status.
• Proven experience in power transmission and distribution, specifically HV substation design and delivery.
• Familiarity with regulatory and health‑and‑safety requirements for HV plant systems.
• Ability to prepare technical reports in English and work across all project lifecycle stages.

Required skills

• Design of HV AIS/GIS substations and associated primary/secondary equipment.
• Experience with overhead line systems and HV cable systems (≥110 kV).
• Proficiency in earthing software (CDEGs) and protection coordination tools (ETAP).
• Control and protection systems design.
• Knowledge of HVDC, smart‑grid and energy‑storage technologies.
