Staff Software Engineer – Charging Systems

About the role

Rivian's Charging Cloud team builds the end‑to‑end systems that power the company’s electric‑vehicle charging network. As a Staff Software Engineer you will own large‑scale backend and cloud services, drive technical direction, and mentor teammates while shaping the future of the platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, architect, and implement robust, scalable backend and cloud systems, owning everything from database schema to API contracts and production health.
• Lead architectural decisions, author RFCs, and influence long‑term platform evolution with data‑driven reasoning.
• Communicate complex trade‑offs clearly to engineers, product managers, and cross‑functional partners.
• Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers through code reviews, pairing, and design sessions.
• Identify risks and opportunities early, propose solutions, and follow through without being prompted.
• Develop RESTful APIs, microservices, and event‑driven components with a focus on performance, security, and maintainability; handle on‑call duties.

Required profile

• 7+ years of professional backend or full‑stack development experience building production systems at scale.
• Proven ownership of systems through incidents, refactors, and scaling efforts.
• Strong written and verbal communication in English and ability to lead technical discussions without direct authority.
• Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Required skills

• Java and Spring (including Spring Boot) with modern idioms.
• Amazon Web Services (AWS) services such as Kafka, SQS/SNS, ElastiCache, Lambda.
• Containerization and orchestration tools: Docker, Kubernetes.
• Relational and non‑relational database design, query optimization, and data modeling.
• Design and operation of distributed, high‑availability systems and event‑driven architectures.
