Senior Software Engineer (Backend & Infrastructure)

About the role

Forager is seeking a senior engineer to own the backend, data, and infrastructure that deliver its data products at scale. This remote, contract position focuses on building APIs, operating search and ETL pipelines, and managing the DevOps platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate RESTful APIs, real‑time enrichment services, and billing/credit metering systems.
• Own Elasticsearch/OpenSearch stack: index design, relevance tuning, cluster health, scaling and migrations.
• Develop and maintain high‑volume ETL pipelines moving billions of data points to searchable stores, Snowflake, and S3.
• Optimize PostgreSQL performance and improve latency, uptime, and scalability.
• Manage AWS infrastructure (ECS, S3, CloudWatch) via infrastructure‑as‑code and CI/CD pipelines.
• Implement observability with Grafana, CloudWatch, and Sentry and handle on‑call responsibilities.
• Contribute occasionally to the customer‑facing React/TypeScript web app and documentation.

Required profile

• 5+ years building and operating production backend systems and APIs.
• Strong proficiency in Python, preferably with Django REST Framework.
• Hands‑on experience with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch at scale.
• Proven track record designing and running large‑scale ETL pipelines.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, and async task queues (Celery/RabbitMQ).
• Core‑owner comfort with AWS services, IaC, and CI/CD (GitHub Actions).
• Ability to work in an AI‑augmented development environment using tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot.
