Software Engineer - Database Engine Internals

About the role

Databricks is building the next‑generation decoupled query engine and structured storage system to replace traditional data warehouses with the Lakehouse architecture. As a Software Engineer focused on Database Engine Internals, you will help design and implement core components that deliver high‑performance relational query execution while retaining the flexibility of general‑purpose platforms like Apache Spark.

Key responsibilities

• Drive requirements clarity and make design decisions for ambiguous, large‑scale problems.
• Produce technical design documents and detailed project plans.
• Develop new features across query compilation, execution, storage structures, and transaction coordination.
• Mentor junior engineers and share best practices.
• Test, roll out, and monitor new capabilities in production environments.

Required profile

• A passion for database, storage, distributed systems, language design, or performance optimization.
• Comfortable working toward a multi‑year vision with incremental deliverables.
• Customer‑oriented mindset with a focus on impact.
• 5+ years of experience in related system development.
• Optional: PhD in databases or distributed systems.
